Study in Canada without a study permit
In order to study in Canada, Foreign nationals require a study permit, however, there are some circumstances where you don’t require a study permit.
Short term study in Canada
Foreign nationals don’t require a study permit if the program they chose to pursue is of 6 months or less. The courses may consist of any subject(s) and may be taken on a part or full-time basis.
Canadian government won’t allow you to extend your visa for the sole purpose of completing a short-term program.
However, If you’re planning to work on campus and want to continue your studies after finishing your program in 6 months or less, then it is most recommended that you seek a study permit for yourself.
Minor Children in Canada
Any minor child staying in Canada can study without a permit at a preschool, primary or Secondary level. This only applies to the children of temporary workers or students, as well as permanent residents and Canadian Citizens except to temporary residents (i.e. visitors).
Family members and Private staff of Diplomats
If you’re planning to study in Canada and you have a family member already based in Canada or you’re a private staff of a foreign diplomat in Canada, then in that case you won’t require a work permit.
Family member includes -
- A spouse or common-law partner
- The dependent child of the individual or their spouse/common-law partner
- The dependent child of a dependent child.
