During your studies, you might face a situation when you have to change or renew your study permit to maintain legal status in Canada.
Maintaining Status in Canada
It’s important to maintain a legal status throughout your stay in Canada and as well as comply with all rules and regulations such as restrictions on the nature of work, maximum hours you can work/per week, etc.
Why Renew/Change a study permit and comply with all conditions?
- You are considered to be on “maintained status” as a temporary resident until a decision has been made with respect to your application If you submit your application before your current status expires. (don’t forget to keep the documents proving that a status extension has been requested)
- You don’t have to leave Canada if you apply before expiring your current status.
- If your status expires before a decision has been made, you’ll be only able to continue your studying as long as you remain in Canada.
- If you lose your status by failing in comply with the conditions of your study permit, You may apply for a restoration of status within 90 days of losing it.
The above rules only apply to temporary residences. If you are applying for permanent residence, you won’t be allowed to stay in Canada until a decision had been made, unless you have a valid temporary status as a visitor, student, or worker.
Renewing/Extending Your Study Permit
If your study permit expires before the completion of your program of study, you will need to apply for an extension before the old one expires. Applying it before 30 days of expiration is mostly recommended. You can submit your application online or by email.
