Common Canadian Immigration Pathways for International Students

Following are some Common Immigration pathways to becoming a permanent resident in Canada after your studies

Express Entry

Express entry is one of the most popular and fastest pathways for international individuals who wish to settle in Canada. It’s an online system, use to manage immigration applications from skilled workers. There are 3 programs that are managed by

Express Entry and these are -

  • Federal skilled worker program (FSWP)
  • Federal skilled trade program (FSTP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

You must meet all the eligibility requirements of at least one of these 3 programs to enroll in it.

Verify your NOC skill level

As you search for work experience after your studies, make sure you choose to work in an Occupation which falls under National Occupation Classification (NOC) Skill level that matches the skilled worker immigration program you are interested in. Stream worker programs are generally categorized as “High”, “intermediate”, and “lower” skilled. Most skilled workers' streams require you to obtain a work experience levered as “High-skilled”, however, there are both federal and provincial skilled worker pathways that enable those with work experience levered as intermediate and lower eligible to apply for permanent residence.

Family Class

Canada has a generous immigration law, It allows you to sponsor close family to obtain permanent residence, for example, If you’re a Canadian Citizen or PR, you can sponsor your spouse or legal partner, if both of you meet the Canadian government’s eligibility criteria.

Quebec

The only Province in Canada whose official language is French that operates its own immigration system. French being the official language of the province prefers individuals proficient in French, however, there are pathways available for non-French speakers who wish to immigrate to Quebec and some of these programs are -

  • Certificate de selection du Quebec (CSQ)
  • Quebec Experience Program

Canada’s Provincial Nominee Program is another popular PR pathway for international students. It offers Canadian permanent residence to individuals who are interested in immigrating to a specific province of Canada. Apart from Quebec and Nunavut, Each province operates its own PNP designed to meet its own specific and demographic roles.

  • Find the PNP that’s right for you
  • Apply to your chosen PNP
  • Obtain a provincial Nomination Certificate
  • Submit your application for permanent residence.

Other economic class PR pathways to consider

As discussed earlier, Canada offers numerous pathways for the International student to immigrate and some of them are:

  • Rural and Northern Immigration pilot - This pathway offers permanent residence to international students that reside in participating rural and northern communities of Canada.
  • Atlantic Immigration program - You need an official job offer to be eligible to apply for this immigration program and best suited for students who have studied in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador.
